Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs). The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.
These charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales prescriptions are free of charge.
If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months, or more than 15 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC.

Repeat prescription requests must be submitted in writing by one of the following methods (please remember to include your full name, address and date of birth):
In order to prevent errors, we do not take telephone requests for repeat prescriptions.
Please take care to only request items that you need at the time.
You can submit your request up to 7 days before you are due to run out of your medication (except for controlled drugs which can be requested up to 3 days in advance).
Repeat medication is issued for 28 days at a time so please ensure that all you medication is due at the same time. If you find that different items run out at different times of the month, please see or speak to the doctor or nurse so that this can be resolved. If you are on a steady regime of medication, you can also set up a repeat request service through your local chemist, who will request the medication from us every month so you only have to make one trip per month to collect the items from the chemist.
Patients on repeat medication will be asked to see a doctor, nurse practitioner or practice nurse at least once a year to review these regular medications and notification should appear on your repeat slip. Please ensure that you book an appropriate appointment to avoid unnecessary delays to further prescriptions.
Please allow two full working days (48 hours) for prescriptions to be processed and remember to take weekends and bank holidays into account. Patients using the postal service should allow longer.
